Mr Bruce Everis,

Why are you picking on Evony for their free to play business model? (free to play but offer in game items for rl $$$)?

Have you been on Facebook recently? Don’t you realize that’s how most of the facebook developers plan to monetize their games? Just look at Zynga the makers of the facebook games Mobwars, Mafiawars, Farmville, Pirates, and Vampire Wars. Aren’t they all based on the SAME business model you are constantly arguing against? They are all free to play but allow you to purchase credits which can be used to buy in game items. See the screenshot below from MafiaWars on facebook.

mafiawars Bruce Everis, why do you pick on Evony and not Zynga?

Isn’t this the new business model written about by Chris Anderson the editor of WIRED magazine. He writes about a new business model called FREE: the future of a radical price.

So Bruce, why are you picking on Evony? Obviously at this point you are picking on them because you think they are related to Chinese Gold Farmers and they sued you, but WHY did you start this fight in the first place? Why haven’t you complained about the dozens of other companies out there using the SAME BUSINESS MODEL to do online games?

MOST of the big Facebook game companies are using the same business model. You play for free but they constantly try and upsell you on getting more levels or buying stuff for the game using real currency. Isn’t this the same thing you are accusing Evony of doing?  Why aren’t you talking about these companies?

    The differences are many.
    1) Evony comment spammed my blog and many others.
    2) Evony Google spammed their advertising.
    3) UMGE, the company that Evony came from, is being sued by Micosoft for click fraud.
    4) The price for paying Evony is very high. The purchase packs of in game items are US$ 30 a go and you need them to be competitive. I have seen accounts of players spending US$ 100 a week on the game. Evony have usurped the whole game mechanic into a gold farm.
    5) Evony has in game gambling for real money.

    plus loads more

    Hi Bruce,

Thanks for telling your side of the story.

It seems like most of your points are based on the fact that you don’t like the company. (Items 1-3) I can’t really debate those and you certainly seem to have some evidence to back them.

Let’s address the points which we can debate.

You say the amount of money Evony charges is expensive. Who are you to say that? Doesn’t the market determine what is expensive or not?

    Have you played Evony?

The Facebook games by Zynga are more expensive. You get less items for the same amount of money as Evony. Until you start blasting Zynga I think you should drop the idea that Evony is more expensive.

Have you played any of the Facebook games by Zynga? Mafia Wars, Mob Wars, Pirates, Farmville, etc?

Let me also explain why your idea of Evony gambling is wrong. Again the Facebook games by Zynga have the same game mechanic. In their hit game Mafia Wars you buy godfather points with real money. These godfather points can be redeemed for in game items or they can be redeemed for in game lottery tickets which can win you more points/items. Doesn’t that sound a lot like the “gambling” in Evony?

The real reason why the courts won’t back your claim that Evony is gambling is… you only get in game items. You can win in game items or Evony cents which is Evony’s in game currency. You CANNOT transfer these items to other players and you CANNOT transfer Evony cents to other players. `Perhaps if you could cash out these items or sell them to other players you’d have a case.

For this reason I don’t think Evony will be considered “gambling”.

You might have some valid points about the history of the company… but does it matter? If those claims are all true does it matter?

Yeah I’m not real happy with the spam. (How do you know it’s not an affiliate and is the company though?) I’m also not real happy that their ievony affiliate program requires you to download a program and for this reason I have not downloaded it or joined their affiliate program.

It just doesn’t seem to me like you’re giving Evony a chance.
Evony deserves a chance and until you start blasting other companies with the same business model I won’t have much respect for you.

bruce, i read your first site with interest, then checked the facts, would love to know where you have gotten all of your anti evony information from as everything i find links back to you, i have been playing this game for about 3 months now and for what it is, A FREE WEB GAME you cant beat it, you dont like ievony?, dont download it, the client default information is about the same as the contact content part of most web based games, at least with evony, you have made a desicion to give them your info.
Shame on you bruce, leave evony alone

  4. Iwind says:

Evony is not a facebook game, and there are several other games it would be better to compare Evony with than these Zynga games when it comes to gameplay. Travian, TribalWars and Ikariam are some, they have the same business model but are way cheaper than Evony.

These games don’t spam advertise like Evony, I’ve never seen any boob advertisements for them, there is no gambling in them and they are not funded by click fraud and WOW account and gold sales. They also seem to care a lot more about their players and don’t sensor their forums as heavily as Evony does. I’ve never heard of any of these game companies suing bloggers criticizing them either.

There are just so many good reasons to criticize Evony, and there being another company out there that does some shady things too is not a reason to stop criticizing Evony.

Of course everything Iwind says is suspect considering in his post he links to an Evony Guide! If he is skeptical of Evony why would he link to an Evony web site when he posts his blog comment?

Because http://www.EvonyGuide.com is my website. It used to be a fan site for the game, similar to this one, but it’s not anymore. I played this game for a while at one of the first servers. The site is definitely not pro Evony anymore.

After looking into this story, not just Everiss blog, I decided to put the information up at my own site to let more people know the whole story. I don’t like spammers, I don’t like misleading adds and I don’t like companies suing people for telling the truth about them either.

The Evony forum is also heavily sensored, it has been like that since day one. And when it comes to this case they refuse to give any comments.

The notion that evony can only be really played with constant money infusions only occurs to total rookies in the game. The truth is there is almost no way to leverage the game cents beyond beginner’s point. Consider this: how much would you have to spend in hard cash to buy yourself 100mils of lumber? Would you really do that? Yet this is a normal amount for advanced game stages. Or take the heroes. The gadget to level a hero costs $10. This means that a 100-levels hero costs astonishing $1000 !!! Yet with smart gameplay, 100 levels for your attack hero is piece of cake. (By the way, that lumber would cost you a price of new car. Yet we send this much just to help fellow players).

You dont have to spend money on evony if you know how to play the game right. The only thing im becoming disappointed in is the low drop rates that seem to be coming into the servers. Im hitting between 50-100 valleys a day and im luckey to see a medal now. On the earlier servers the drop rates where higher. Its obviously down to trying to get people to spend more money.

  10. Can't figure out how to play says:

Hi, Evony is availabe on Facebook now through Facebook connect I believe, and I signed up and I’m feeling dumb I don’t get the concept and I accidentally clicked “master of the tutorial” or whatever the button was and I can’t figure out what I’m doing. I have no opinions yet because I’m confused as to how to play, and I”ll make up my mind after I figure out how to see if knowing how, I can play and like it or not. But out of tutorial mode, I can’t type in world to ask for help/ask questions. It says I need speakers. Then I tried to get them but you need cents, and I can only find out how to get cents by spending actual cash. And I’m not cool with spending money on a game I don’t understand. I’ve played Zyngas Mafia wars and Vampire Wars and while you can spend money on both, you can also actually play pretty well not spending money. There’s incentive to buy, if you really really want to be the best of the best, but you can play pretty happily just doing what you can to get ahead playing free. This so far, I can’t find out how to do on FB’s link in for Evony. I’m at a loss. I don’t really get the appeal of this game, I don’t feel like anything happens. Though I am a newb and can’t get it to work right, so I’m very likely missing something. I get that they want money, all games pretty much do, but many of Zynga and Playdom games for FB are way easier to play never spending money. You can’t get all the best stuff, but it’s not as if you can’t play at all or you can’t get anything good. Please, any tips about the game I’m missing, I’d love to hear. Thanks
